Dead Sea
Located 423 meters below the sea level and 377 meters depth is this amazing wonder of nature, the Dead Sea. It has been called by different names in various languages and religions like ‘Sea of Salt’ or the ‘Sea of the Arabah’ or the ‘Stinking Sea’. It is located in the Syro-African Rift, with Jordan to the east and Israel in the west.
Its salinity is 33.7%, which is one of the highest in the world for any lake. It is much more saline that any ocean you can find and has rightly been called a hyper saline lake. The main tributary of this sea is the river Jordan, which in itself has a long history. The sea does not drain its water anywhere, which is one of the major reasons of the high salinity of this sea. Because this sea has been separated from the Mediterranean Sea by the rising lands of salt deposit, the water only comes in from the Jordan River and does not go out from any other point.
The sea has been rightly called as the Dead Sea as no life can flourish in its waters. Because of the high salt content and also the presence of huge varieties of various minerals, this water cannot sustain any major life form in it.
Although this sea cannot sustain life, but the rich mineral deposits as well as content has transformed this place into a major attraction for tourists and chemists among the others from all over the world.
The place is known for its amazing healing powers as well. It has been scientifically proven to help patients in relieving their pains due to arthritis, psoriasis, eczema etc.
Though it is called the Dead Sea, but it is no less than a nature’s wonder in every sense!
